Everything You Put in Your Body Is Either Fueling Disease or Fighting It

I recently heard a phrase that stopped me in my tracks:

“Everything you put in your body is either fueling disease or fighting it.”

That’s not just a catchy quote—it’s a truth that, once you see it, you can’t unsee.

Let’s start with sugar.

Of course, we expect it in cakes and cookies but when you start to read labels, you realize it’s in everything. Sauces, dressings, breads, snacks, even foods marketed as “healthy.” One of the sneakiest places? Tomato sauce. Most store-bought sauces even the organic or “low-fat” ones have added sugar. Next time you’re at the store, check the label. You might be surprised. Then, try finding one without added sugar—it does exist, and it’s just as flavorful. Small swaps like this can make a big difference over time.

Then there’s alcohol.

Did you know alcohol is a Group 1 carcinogen? That’s the same category as tobacco and asbestos. It’s been proven to cause at least seven types of cancer—including breast, colon, liver, and mouth cancer. Yet it’s still marketed as something glamorous, social, and even healthy in moderation. But the truth is, alcohol isn’t doing our bodies any favors. That “relaxing glass of wine” comes at a cost we don’t always see right away.

And let’s not forget ultra-processed foods.

These are the packaged snacks, frozen meals, sugary cereals, and artificially flavored everything that fill the center aisles of most grocery stores. They’re chemically engineered to taste amazing and keep us coming back but they’re also linked to inflammation, obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and even depression. They’re not just empty calories they’re actively harming us.

So what do we do?

We don’t have to be perfect. But we can be more intentional.

• Read labels. If a product has ingredients you can’t pronounce or wouldn’t cook with at home, it’s probably not serving your health.

• Reduce added sugar. Start with simple swaps—like tomato sauce with no

It’s about liberation—from marketing lies, from harmful habits, and from the slow creep of disease.

You have more power than you think.

Your body is always working for you.

Let’s start giving it what it needs to thrive.
